I first saw Voyage, the movie version when I was about 8 or 9 years old. My brother and I went to
the neighborhood theaters and saw the movie repeatedly during it's very successful run after being released in 1961. I fell
in love with the glass nose submarine Seaview and thought all the special effects were awesome. Then, when Voyage came to
TV, on September 14, 1964 I was hooked all over again only this time I found that in no time I was totally hooked on Richard
Basehart in the role of Admiral Harriman Nelson. I don't know what it was about him. Maybe his voice, his steal blue eyes
that could pierce right through you from the television screen, though admittedly, I had no idea what color his eyes were
then because the first year was in black and white. When they began the 2nd season in glorious color...I couldn't be happier.
I liked the changes made to Seaview and the addition of the yellow flying sub. Richard Basehart as the admiral was my secret
pal and a father figure since my own dad was a truck driver and on the road most of the time back in those days. When Voyage
was cancelled I was devastated. The following fall it was announced that it would be shown five nights a week on one of the
local channels. I was in heaven again and so it has been for most of the 50 years since Voyage debuted on TV. Before we had
VCR's and DVD players, I used to record all the shows, sound only, with my folks reel to reel Wollensak recorder. I hung the
mike facing the TV speaker so as not to pick up too much background noise. When Voyage was released on VHS for Columbia House,
I bought all those tapes and was highly disappointed when they discontinued producing them. Finally, when FOX came out with
the remastered DVD's it was literally in seventh heaven for finally I would be able to have all 110 episodes in pristine remastered
commercials DVD's. Richard Basehart, David Hedison, Bob Dowdell, and the rest of the crew never looked better.
As for how I got started writing...I didn't get on the internet until the late
nineties and couldn't believe all the information about the series and the actors was available. Further more, this was when
I made the stark realization that there were other fans out there just like me. (I can't tell you how much teasing and ridicule
I used to put up with from family but never-the-less I endured.) I was even more amazed when I began to find all the wonderful
fan fiction that people were writing. Many of the stories went beyond where the TV episodes left off. After years of reading
and winding up retired and unable to work, I thought I should do something to occupy my time. That is when I decided...what
better way to keep occupied than trying my hand at writing Voyage fan fiction. So far I have completed four stories and am
presently working on a fifth story. I might not have been able to get going but for the inspiration of fellow fans on this
website and others.
I suppose some people think
me weird while others think I do strange things. What can I say. Through and through I am a Voyage fan and now I'm living
the fantasy writing about my all time favorite show and characters.
